What Jane Street is building
Of 219 open roles, most are engineering, infrastructure or research. Nine quantitative trader postings and two exotic options seats are the only explicitly trading jobs on the board. The weight of the hiring is on building systems rather than staffing desks.
Jane Street is hiring ASIC engineers and ASIC physical design engineers in both New York and London, alongside FPGA roles. FPGA work is common at low-latency firms. Designing custom chips is a much larger commitment: it takes years and real capital, and pays back only if the latency advantage lasts long enough to justify fixing it in hardware. Few trading firms staff this at all.
Compiler engineers, programming language engineers and a tools-and-compilers team appear in both offices. So do formal methods engineers, who prove properties of software rather than test it. Formal verification is normally found in aerospace, chip design and cryptography, and it is expensive to do. Its presence here follows from the firm's long investment in OCaml and its own toolchain.
Fifteen roles cover machine learning research, engineering and performance. The performance roles concern training and inference cost, which becomes a separate job once models are large. The board also carries a machine learning educator, whose work is teaching the rest of the firm, and a campus recruiter dedicated to machine learning and quantitative research.
Sixty-two of the 219 roles are in Hong Kong, against 96 in New York, 46 in London and 15 in Singapore. The Hong Kong roles are senior and varied: an exotic options trader, machine learning engineers, data centre engineering. Several competitors have moved APAC weight towards Singapore over the past few years.
Securities financing and financial resource management specialists appear in New York and London. Those roles deal with funding, collateral and capital efficiency, and they appear when positions are large or long-lived enough for financing to become its own discipline. The two exotic options seats point the same way, towards business that carries model and inventory risk.
The infrastructure footprint is large: eleven Linux engineers, four Windows engineers, four senior network engineers, and data centre engineers in Hong Kong and London. Around thirteen more roles cover cybersecurity engineering, threat modelling, and detection and response.
For a candidate, the widest routes in are hardware, compilers, formal methods, ML infrastructure and security. Hong Kong has the most open seats and the least competition for them.

How to approach them
The trading seats are few and heavily contested; the engineering ones are where the firm is spending. If you have RTL, physical design or verification experience, the ASIC roles have very few comparable employers anywhere in finance. If you work on compilers, type systems or formal verification, this is one of a handful of trading firms that will treat that as your main qualification rather than a curiosity. ML candidates with systems backgrounds should target the performance roles, which are harder to fill than the research ones. Hong Kong is worth taking seriously: 62 open roles, and they are not junior. Lead with things you built — a compiler, a core you taped out, a model you made faster — rather than a description of a strategy.
